It has finally happened. The folks at iTunes have finally realized that there are people in the Great White North who would also like to check out and download the latest snowboard flicks legally.

Forum is one of the first brands to jump on the train by making their latest team video Forever available, along with last year’s Forum or Against’em and That.

Grab the link to the store from SnowboardCanada.com, and while you’re on the site check out Nic Sauve’s re-edit from the latest Forum offering.

Hotties on the Hill - Mammoth 1/30/10

By admin | February 4, 2010

Submitted by www.snowboard-women.com

Here are 2 real cool female Hotties on the Hill - Amy and Rebecca.  We met them at McCoy station at lunchtime this past Saturday as they waited for their friends to meet them.  I actually was eavesdropping a little bit because they were sitting right next to us and talking about the McCoy Web Cam so it was they who told me about it! And so I had to start talking to them. They were 2 cool chicks from the Long Beach area.  Both were snowboarding regular foot, and have been at it for 10 years.  And of course, relaxing at midday with a cold beer… ladies after my own heart.  Great meeting you two!

Mammoth Hottie on the Hill 1/29/10

By admin | February 3, 2010

Submitted by www.snowboard-women.com

Meet Steve - we saw him down at the Canyon Lodge gondola this weekend at the beginning of the day.  I noticed his cute kitten board - one of the Burton Un.Inc series a few seasons back.  I squealed when I saw the board (what can I say, I love little kitties and doggies, and on a snowboard no less!) and that was how we started talking.  He is from Solana Beach and has been riding 7 years.  What a great sport, he let me take a picture of him and his board even though his friends were laughing at us. Nice to meet you Steve!

Mammoth Trip 1/28-1/31/10

By admin | February 2, 2010

Submitted by www.snowboard-women.com

This weekend’s Mammoth trip was another fun one.  I went with a completely different group of folks than I usually do.  We had 2 condos and 14 people!  For 2 straight days, I was snowboarding with a group of guys, all of whom were better and a lot faster than me so I really had to step up my game to keep up with them and to “represent” for us women.  I don’t have a lot of pictures from the slopes because it was all-business, no-nonsense riding for the most part and I was so exhausted!

Mammoth Mountain Weather

They took me through some deep powder tree runs; with all the recent snow there was still a few stashes to be found.  They also knew the mountain really well and so we went on some hidden little trails and secret spots..

Chair 21 Tree Runs

Roger’s, runs under Chair 21, tree stashes way off the far side of Chair 5, the high side of China Bowl… lots of fun hidden and empty trails that I hope I remember how to get to another time.

Chair 21 Mammoth Mountain

The trip was also fun because I broke out of my usual routine and we checked out some new places for apres ski, dinner, and nightlife:  Hyde Lounge, Lakanuki, Gomez’s… I’ll be posting details on those separately.

The weather was great (except for some clouds on Fri and then snow showers on Saturday afternoon)… we had almost NO wind, and mostly blue skies.

Mammoth Mountain 1/30/10

It was also cold enough that the show stayed fresh feeling and there was not a lot of ice or crust on the runs.  Except for Chair 23 going down to Scotty’s.  Joana and I played a little human bowling with one another on that one.

But the weekend highlight for me - we ran in to Woolly, the Mammoth Mountain Mascot, TWICE this weekend!  Great photo ops at the top of Gold Rush and at McCoy Station.

Apres Ski Review - Lakanuki, Mammoth CA

By admin | February 2, 2010

Submitted by www.snowboard-women.com

Introducing a new feature on the blog - we will be doing reviews of apres-ski happy hours.  First up, Lakanuki in the Mammoth Village.

lakanuki.jpg

We know Lakanuki as one of the best places to go dancing in the Village on Saturday evenings.  We never considered it for happy hour because we usually go to Whiskey Creek when we get off the hill.  However, this weekend I got the chance to try Lakanuki out.

We got there at about 4pm and it was pretty empty cuz it was so early.  Part of our crew had already secured a large table area AND met some fun folks to socialize with.  Lakanuki offers plenty of tables and the bar has a friendly, fun vibe.   The staff is really friendly and efficient (ask for Amy’s section, she was the best!)

Inside Lakanuki happy hour

The Lakanuki happy hour goes from 3-6pm. Their menu is a great deal - $3.50 for local Mammoth Brewing Co. beers AND for their killer Mai Tai’s and Margaritas!  A lot of our people got the Mai Tais but, that is a little too much for me…  They’re full of rum and served in tall pint glasses.  As for me, I tried the Hefeweizen beer - tastes almost as good as Blue Moon and they even serve it with an orange slice.

Lakanuki Mammoth Brewing Co Hefeweizen

Lakanuki has some decent bar food appetizers for $5 apiece, including buffalo wings, calamari, french fries, chicken tenders, a quarter-rack of ribs, nachos… some good stuff.  (Secret tip - ask for chicken tenders with buffalo wing sauce and bleu cheese - voila, non-messy wings!) George thought the wings were pretty spicy, but I loved them.

Buffalo wings at Lakanuki Mammoth

By the time we left, about 5:45pm, the bar had filled in and there were plenty of folks enjoying the last few minutes of happy hour.  The music was a little louder and the crowd a little more festive, having indulged in a few of those happy hour priced cocktails ;-)

Crowd at Lakanuki

We got our bill and all agreed it was a great bargain for all the food and drinks we had.  Perfect capper to a good day of riding.  I recommend the Lakanuki happy hour!

Lakanuki is in the Mammoth Village, across from the Starbucks.  Contact them by phone at 760 934 7447 or check out their website at www.lakanuki.com. As they say, Mahalo!

Snowboard Safety - To Helmet or Not to Helmet?

By admin | February 1, 2010

Submitted by www.snowboard-women.com

Snowboard Helmet crew at MammothWhen you ride, do you wear a helmet?  And why or why not?

I know people who don’t wear helmets because they “look dorky.”  I’d rather look a little dorky than break my head open, thanks.  Personally I will not ride without one because I ride in a lot of trees and as I’ve mentioned before, I also wear a helmet to protect myself from other people losing control!  (and I quote a past post, “You just never know when  some dumbass will run into you.“)

Today Boardistan.com posted a  link to a story on ConsumerAffairs.com which highlighted a proposed state Assembly bill which would require all California resort employees and riders under age 18 to wear a helmet.   The proposed bill, AB 1652, would also require resorts to adhere to more uniform standards of hazard & out-of-bounds signage, put standardized safety padding on lift towers & other obstacles, and provide more accessible information about the how and why of each ski or snowboard accident.

I agree with the proposed mandatory helmets law.  After all, isn’t it the law for kids to wear helmets biking?  Seems only reasonable to require for snowboarding too, given the inherent risks in the sport.   I for one am going to keep wearing my helmet!

Nike 6.0 Recreates Quebec’s “Red Ledge”

By admin | February 1, 2010

Submitted by liv2ride

Nike 6.0 is creating the GREATEST HITS Park at Mt. Seymour, BC to support the local shred community. The Nike 6.0 GREATEST HITS Park is rebuilding three iconic features that influenced snow-culture history, bringing together world-class spots in one location and adding to the already epic roster of shred-spots in the Vancouver area.

The first feature to be reconstructed is the Red Ledge, a daunting concrete monster at Montmorency Falls in Quebec City. Made famous by seasoned film crews, the Red Ledge may be wide, but it’s steep and fast—and don’t underestimate the power of that bottom kink. Many banger tricks have gone down here while several other brave souls have been broke off at the Ledge.

“I remember the first time I saw someone hit the Red Ledge and it looked surreal. I’ve always wanted to ride it, but just haven’t made it that way. I’m pumped it will be in my backyard at Mt. Seymour and available for all the local riders to hit!” Kevin Sansalone, Nike 6.0 Canada Snow Mentor.

To unveil the Red Ledge, Nike 6.0 is hosting a grassroots jam session at Mt. Seymour on Saturday, January 30th. “It’s been so much fun to fabricate a replica of the Red Ledge! It’s going to be a standout addition to the Mt. Seymour Park and super fun all season. The hardest part has been keeping it under wraps. Can’t wait to see kids riding it on Saturday for the first time!” Mark Williams, Mt. Seymour Terrain Park Manager.

The free jam session, open to all, goes down 11:00 AM-3:00 PM, and includes food, music, and 6.0 product giveaways. Be sure to bring your bangers- 6.0 hired a professional photographer to snap pics of the session and riders with the best shots will win 6.0 product. Registration is required (10:00 AM at the Nike 6.0 hut) and everyone must sign a waiver, downloadable at http://www.nike6.com/. Anyone under age 19 will need a parent or guardian signature. To celebrate the Red Ledge opening, Mt. Seymour has graciously thrown down a free season pass for one lucky rider who cast a vote in the local Vancouver feature contest.

Sean Genovese gets humped on YoBeat

By admin | February 1, 2010

Submitted by FrontLipped

Alex Mertz PHOTO

I like YoBeat.

Allow me to expand on that. I like YoBeat because they do REAL interviews with snowboarders who REALLY have something to say about our sport. You won’t find any crap on there from Shaun White or Chas Guldemond about how stoked they are that they crammed an extra 180 on to their contest winning spin, and that they couldn’t have done it without the help of (insert energy drink company here) or (insert large corporation/big box store here).

With that out of the way, last week Brooke Geery fired some questions at Sean Genovese about being Canadian, running his own board company and showering…yes, showering.

Check it out.

Birthday Mammoth Trip 1/15-1/18/2010

By admin | January 21, 2010

Submitted by www.snowboard-women.com

This long MLK weekend we took a trip up to Mammoth.  As usual we stayed at Viewpoint Condos and enjoyed the proximity to the Village and Gondola.

On Friday night we stayed in and the members of the condo got acquainted.  I love getting groups of my friends together who don’t already know each other.  It always makes for a fun cross-section of the different areas of my life!

Saturday we got onto the mountain by 10am, which is early for Jess and my standards.  (Oftentimes, we are what surfers call “nooners!”)  It was a bright sunny day on the hill, and surprisingly not crowded for the Saturday of a 3 day weekend.

The crew atop Chair 25

Earlier in the week there had been 15 new inches of snow, and with the temps staying pretty steadily low, there was no meltoff and subsequent freeze-over.  So we had packed powder conditions throughout the day with little to no ice on the runs.  In fact there was still semi-powder in places!   And it was nice that there were virtually NO lift lines, check out the wait at Chair 25:

No lift line at Chair 25

We rode most of the day on Saturday and then Saturday evening the gang treated me to a nice birthday dinner at the Chart House, yum!  I had a delicious filet & shrimp meal, with a baked potato…what restaurants serve baked potatoes any more?  It even came with 5 different toppings.  A yummy indulgence.

Birthday dinner at Chart House Mammoth Lakes

After dinner we checked out the new Hyde Lounge for all of 5 minutes as it was too crowded, so it was off to enjoy the music at Lakanuki. After some dancing, we headed back to the condo.

Sunday turned out dark, stormy, and extremely windy.  We stayed out only a few hours, and I got very windburned.  Luckily I have that season pass so even just going out a few hours was “worth it” since I didn’t put out any more cash towards a lift ticket.  Sunday evening was another chill night, a repeat of Friday… but luckily I saw some people in our complex putting on chains in anticipation of Monday’s coming storms, so I followed suit before it got too dark, to get ready for the next day’s driving.   (Hired Goodyear to put the chains on actually!)

Monday was the big payoff!  It was spitting snow most of the night into Monday so there was a nice coating of 3-4″ in town… then we went up to the mountain early and that’s when it really started puking snow.  It was even less crowded on the hill on Monday than Sat. was… did a lot of people NOT have Monday off and took off home early?  This is a pic headed up Chair 25 looking down the runs:

Empty Mammoth Mountain

The snow was mounting up like crazy and there were white-out conditions, but it was amazing if we stayed lower.  Gold Rush was windy and cold with very low visibility but the Lower Dry Creek run was super fun.  The powder built up all morning and we stayed near Roller Coaster and did  tree runs over and over, getting fresh powder tracks on most runs.  It was almost thigh deep in spots! We were soaked and completely encrusted in snow by noon when we got off the hill to head home.  It was one of the best days I’ve ever had on the mountain and I can’t wait to go back next weekend!

Zered Basset Gallery Opening at Mountain Creek

By admin | January 18, 2010

Submitted by liv2ride

On Saturday January 23rd Mountain Creek South will play host to opening night of the Zered Basset photo gallery.  Zered and fellow Zoo York skaters recently returned from a historic humanitarian skate trip to Cuba.  Due to the embargo in Cuba, it is hard for the local skaters to get product. Zered, Zoo York, Red Bull and Chris Nieratko had a humbling trip experiencing the hardships of Cuba and had an opportunity to give back and brought in over 50 complete skateboards, 150 decks, 100 sets of wheels and 200 pairs of shoes from eS & Vans to some very thankful and deserving kids.

View the trip through Zered’s eyes with original photography on display at Mountain Creek for the first time. Head up to the mountain for drinks and a look at some of the footage captured by Nieratko during the trip and shred the Red Bull bowl with Zered, Ron Deily and some of the Zoo York crew.

Looking forward to Mammoth this weekend

By admin | January 17, 2010

Submitted by www.snowboard-women.com

Well hey it’s my birthday today :-)  To celebrate, 8 of us are headed up to our favorite snowboarding getaway, of course Mammoth!  As is our custom, our crew is staying at Viewpoint Condos - probably the best value by far for the money.  It’s the perfect location - we just park the car and we’re in for the weekend, as Viewpoint is walking distance to the gondola and the Village.  Some might even say stumbling distance… ;-)

I will be interested to see how the night life and the village itself continues to evolve.  I’ve been hearing (and observing myself) that Mammoth is going really “luxe” and upscale - a big evolution from how it used to be, more chill and laid-back.  As part of its attempt to revitalize its image and become more worldly, to attract more tourist dollars, many new and very upscale shops & restaurants have opened in the Village.  Some might even say Mammoth is turning into the Los Angeles of the mountains!

As proof of this, I just about spit out my coffee when I read that there is now going to be a “Hyde Lounge Mammoth” opening this weekend.  I for one am kind of bummed that this has come to “our” little resort town - does the vibe of mean-looking bouncers creating false lines, dudes with Ed Hardy shirts, plasticky women with breast implants, and velvet ropes fit with the Mammoth scene?

As always, a lively discussion going on at the Mammoth forums.

Will report on the weekend when we return!

On Saturday, January 30, 2010 the Red Bull Snake Run will take place at Waterville Valley Resort. Don’t worry, there will be no real snakes in the run, just the latest signature Red Bull feature and a skate inspired snake run of medium sized hits, bank turns, rails and the slippery features.

The jam session will have heats of riders snaking through the run every 10 seconds. Double cork 1080’s won’t be the name of the game but overall style, skills and snakeablity could win riders a handsome bounty from event sponsors. Standout riders from each heat will move on and continue their way to finals.

There will be 3 divisions for the Snake Run: open, women and 14 and under. Stay tuned to redbullsnowboarding.com and snowboardwaterville.com for more news on the event.

4th Annual Rome Local GNAR Contest Announced

By admin | January 17, 2010

Submitted by liv2ride

ROME COMMUNIQUE:

ROME SDS—4th ANNUAL LOCAL GNAR VIDEO CONTEST

Janurary 14th 2010

Four years ago Rome decided it was time to take the team on a on a short video trip. After some brainstorming, the thing that made the most sense was to just grab the crew, jump in a van, and drive around and snowboard. This was the birth of the first GNAR, or Great North American Rendezvous.

The GNAR video was distributed for free, contained no helicopter shots, no double corks, and was not released on Blue Ray. Even watching that video today (which can be done on YouTube by searching “Rome SDS the GNAR”…no audio of course…) it stands the test of time. A short, fun video about snowboarding.

Then came the Local GNAR Contest, a snowboard video contest for locals where crews from all over the world shred, film and compete for $1,000 and a load of Rome gear. The first three years of the Local GNAR Contest has produced some great videos, like Kevin Castanheira and crew who won last year. And the entries get better every year so we’re expecting to see some good stuff this year.

A lot of things have changed in the past four years. Since the GNAR and the birth of Local GNAR, Rome has released two full-length snowboard movies (Any Means and No Correct Way), high-def cameras have become super affordable, and the limits of what can be done on a snowboard are pushed every year.

This being said, one thing remains true: There’s nothing like getting together with a crew of your friends, and snowboarding. This is what Local GNAR is about—short, five-minute videos of you and your crew out snowboarding and having a good time. We watch a lot of snowboarding over here at Rome, and without fail, some of the stuff that stokes us out the most every season are the entries we’ve received for the Local GNAR Contest.

So grab your camera, call your friends and go snowboarding.

First Place this year will take home $1,000 cash, 2 Rome Artifact snowboards, 2 pairs of 390 bindings

Second Place will be grabbing 2 Rome Artifacts, 2 pairs of 390 bindings and

Third place will be walking away with 2 pairs of 390 bindings and 5 pairs of gloves

Keep your edit to 5 minutes or less, and make sure that you’re entries are in by May 1, which is the deadline. Make sure all videos are in Quicktime format. For any other questions shoot an email over to ridercouncil@romesnowboards.com

For more news and Rome SDS happenings keep an eye on www.romesnowboards.com, www.facebook.com/romesnowboards and www.twitter.com/romesds.
